Celebrating 3 Years of Success: JhaJi Store’s Journey in Pickles and Progress
by Kalpana Jha on Jul 19, 2024
I am so excited to share this news with you – JhaJi Store has turned three this July 2024! 🎉✨
Thinking back on our journey fills me with gratitude and happy memories. It all started on a warm summer day.
I was making the first batches of pickles with my team in the courtyard. When a neighbor saw us and asked if she could buy a jar for herself.
I was just happy at handing over the jar for feedback. But to my surprise, she insisted on paying for it. Reluctantly, I mentioned the price as Rs. 249/-.
That was our very first sale. I still have that Rs. 250/- framed in my cabinet as a reminder of our beginning.
The early response was amazing! Many of you shared how our pickles reminded you of home, no matter where you were.
This is exactly the feeling I wanted to bring with every jar. From the time we opened the online store in July 2021, we started selling Rs. 5 lakhs worth of pickles each month.
I quickly realized that to grow further, we would need more funds. That's when I decided to knock on the doors of Shark Tank India.
We could never have imagined how this would positively change our lives.
People from all over the country showered us with love and support. They were thrilled to see two homemakers and first-time entrepreneurs starting a business from a small town in Bihar.
The next 3-6 months felt like a dream.
Orders kept pouring in without us running any advertisements or promotions. The pickles we had made earlier sold out so quickly. But lenders came in to help us with money to make more pickles.
Angel investors showed interest too, wanting to be part of our growing story.
By the end of our first year, we received a wonderful surprise – Vineeta and Namita visited us in Darbhanga.
They had decided to invest in our business alongside the angel investors.
This way, on our first anniversary in July 2022, We closed our first round of investment. Then, we started using these funds to grow the business.
The most heart-touching milestone however, was moving our production out of my humble courtyard to a spacious new home.
We laid the foundation for our very own kitchen factory. I named it Annapoorna, after the goddess of food and kitchen. That summer was nothing short of magical.
Our production soared to new heights, setting records and pushing our boundaries. To serve you better, we added a new warehouse in Patna.
We introduced new 500g jars and delightful sample packs, bringing more of Mithila’s flavors to your homes.
Over the rest of our second year, we continued to grow massively. In two of the twelve months, we crossed the remarkable milestone of Rs. 1 Crore in sales.
This incredible achievement meant I could support many more local women with jobs. The stories I heard from the women working at JhaJi Store were heartwarming and inspiring.
Many shared how they no longer depended on abusive husbands for daily expenses. Others found the means to put their children into better schools or ensure continued education.
Some upgraded their homes, adding a television or even a personal vehicle.
By the end of our second year, we had sold almost Rs. 5 Crore worth of pickles and welcomed more than 50,000 customers into our JhaJi family.
We were fortunate to attract a new group of investors who also wanted to be part of this change.
Many of these investors had lived or worked in Bihar and shared a deep emotional bond with the place.
We closed our second round of funding by our second anniversary and set our sights on turning the business profitable.
We worked with our suppliers for better rates and started shipping more orders from Gurgaon instead of Patna.
Our costs of making and sending the pickles came down by 30%.
Thanks to these efforts, we achieved profitability in 3 of the 12 months in our third year.
As we celebrate this third anniversary, I am filled with immense joy and gratitude. When I started this journey, my goals were to add 1,00,000 customers to our family and create 50 jobs in Darbhanga.
Today, we have not only met but exceeded those goals.
We have successfully served almost 200,000 orders to nearly 1,50,000 families across 10,000 zip codes in India.
We have directly employed more than 120 people in full-time and part-time positions, creating meaningful livelihoods.
Additionally, we have spent crores on purchases with local farmers and traders, supporting our community and ensuring the authenticity of our products.
Now, I have new goals for the coming three years.
I want to launch new products, including snacks and sweets from my beloved land of Mithilanchal. I dream of seeing these products on quick commerce websites and in stores near you.
I aim to create at least 500 more jobs locally in Darbhanga and Bihar. And I envision laying the foundation for a world-class food processing company, starting right here in Darbhanga.
Aap logo ke pyaar aur aashirwaad se hi yeh sab sambhav hua hai, aur mein prarthana karti hoon ki aap logon ki aur oopar wale ki Kripa mere aur mere team par bani rahe!
